JOHANNESBURG – Former Cape Town Spurs captain Asanele Velebayi has signed a long-term contract with Kaizer Chiefs, marking the 22-year-old winger’s move to the Soweto giants after weeks of contractual disputes with his previous club.
The Cape Town-born player, a product of the Ajax Cape Town academy, made his senior debut for Spurs in 2020 and went on to make 33 appearances, eventually captaining the side. Relegation of Spurs to the ABC Motsepe Foundation Championship cleared the way for his transfer after the PSL Dispute Resolution Chamber declared him a free agent on Monday.
Kaizer Chiefs unveiled Velebayi at their Naturena training ground on Tuesday, adding him to a growing list of signings this season that includes Siphesihle Ndlovu, Nkanyiso Shinga, Ethan Chislett, Flavio Silva, Thabiso Monyane, and Paseka Mako.
Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr described Velebayi as a perfect fit for the club’s playing style and culture, noting the winger’s potential to strengthen the team’s midfield and attack.
Chiefs opened the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season with a win over Stellenbosch.
