LOBAMBA – His Majesty King Mswati III has declared Monday, 8 September 2025 a public holiday to allow the nation to observe the annual Umhlanga Reed Dance ceremony at Ludzidzini Royal Residence.
The announcement paves the way for thousands of maidens from across the Kingdom to gather for the eight-day traditional rite, which culminates in the presentation of reeds to the Queen Mother. The reeds are used to reinforce the royal kraal’s windbreak, symbolising protection and unity within the monarchy.
Over 100,000 maidens are expected to participate this year, dressed in traditional attire and performing song and dance as part of the cultural celebrations.
Held annually, the Umhlanga ceremony draws large local and international crowds, making it one of the most important events on Eswatini’s cultural calendar.
