EZULWINI – Eswatini’s student allowances have been raised to E2,000 per month, a move announced by Labour and Social Security Minister, Phila Buthelezi. This increase will be effective from the 2025/2026 academic year.
The last time these allowances were reviewed was in August 2019. Previously, local students received E1,690 per month, which amounted to E16,900 annually. The new increment brings the yearly allowance to E20,000 per student.
Minister Buthelezi stated that the government recognized the need to address the impact of inflation on students, despite the current fiscal challenges. He explained that the government’s decision was a result of their commitment to ensuring the wellbeing of students.
“It pleases Government to inform Emaswati that student allowances have now increased to E20,000.00 per student/ per year which is E2,000.00 per student/ per month,” the Minister said.
He also acknowledged that while the new amount might not cover all student needs, the government remains dedicated to providing equal opportunities for all Emaswati to achieve their academic goals. “We believe that investing in education is an investment in the future of our nation,” he added.
Buthelezi also extended his gratitude to His Majesty’s Cabinet for their intervention in making it possible for students to continue their education with fewer obstacles. He reassured the public that the government would continue to prioritize the interests of Emaswati.
