Manzini – Over 10 000 people gathered in Matsapha for the ninth edition of the Eswatini Biggest Braai, making it one of the most attended charity events in the country this year.
The event, hosted by Philani Maswati Charity Organisation, took place on Saturday and drew massive crowds, with patrons showing up in large numbers to support the cause. Speaking during a press briefing at Pizza Club of Grill in Matsapha, the organisation’s chairman, Lufto Dlamini, described the turnout as admirable and said the 10th edition would benefit from a detailed review of this year’s experience.
“A post-mortem will be done to evaluate what worked and what didn’t, so we can improve for next year,” Dlamini said.
Funds raised from the braai are directed toward supporting elderly residents at the Philani Maswati Elderly Home in Mantjonga. Dlamini explained that the charity does not have a fixed income stream and relies heavily on the proceeds from the annual event to sustain the home.
He said although the event contributed significantly to their budget, it was not yet enough to fully meet the needs of the elderly. He expressed gratitude to sponsors and exhibitors, singling out Robertson Spices, the main sponsor, and Eswatini Meat Industries, which donated meat valued at over E350,000.
Dlamini also noted that space for exhibitors had run out this year, an indication that the event was growing in popularity. He praised the spirit of unity shown by Emaswati and said the braai stood apart from other festivals because it was driven by community support and compassion for the elderly.
He also thanked members of the media for playing a key role in spreading information and building interest in the event.
