Mbabane: Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) elite teams will be cut to 12 and there will be 16 in its feeder National First Division from next season.
This is if a submitted proposal to that effect is passed at the Eswatini Football Association (EFA) Annual General Meeting (AGM) in July. Football chief Adam ‘Bomber’ Mthethwa confirmed in his press briefing this afternoon, May 15 that a proposal to have 12 premier league clubs, 16 in first division and a further 16 each for the regional Super Leagues will be debated during the General Assembly.
Currently, the premier league has 14 clubs and 12 in the first division. Even though, rules on how that will be implemented will be attached on the proposal for debate according to Mthethwa, the likelihood though is that four premier league teams might get the chop when the current season ends, currently brought to a halt by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The rest of the developmental region leagues will be determined by the number of clubs.
“At the AGM, a structure for football leagues will be presented. The executive committee appointed an ad-hoc committee to look to such and a proposal of 12, premier league clubs, 16 in first division and 16 in each regional super league will be tabled,” Mthethwa said.
There regional Super Leagues are Hhohho, Manzini, Shiselweni and Lubombo.
