MBABANE – The early MTN Premier League title race is already beginning to take shape, with several of the country’s big guns making their intentions known after the opening rounds of the 2026/27 season.
While it is still early days in the campaign, the opening results have provided an early indication of the teams likely to challenge for honours.
Ubombo Sugar have made the strongest start, winning both of their opening matches to sit at the top of the standings with six points. Their perfect record has immediately placed them among the early pace-setters.
Green Mamba and Royal Leopards have also started strongly. Both teams have collected four points from their opening two matches, keeping them firmly in the early title conversation.
Royal Leopards opened their campaign with a 3-3 draw against Manzini Sea Birds before recording a 3-1 victory over Ezulwini United. Green Mamba, meanwhile, drew their opening match 0-0 against Mbabane Highlanders before defeating Tabankulu Celtics 2-0.
Mbabane Highlanders have also sent out an early warning.
After being held to a goalless draw by Green Mamba in their opening fixture, the capital city giants responded emphatically by hammering Amawele 4-1. The victory moved them onto four points and boosted their early position among the leading contenders.
Young Buffaloes have also made their presence felt after defeating defending 8Bet Trade Fair Cup champions Moneni Pirates 2-1, while Pigg’s Peak Professionals collected three points from their opening match.
For some of the traditionally ambitious clubs, however, the opening rounds have provided an early reminder that the title race will not be straightforward.
The likes of Mbabane Swallows, Nsingizini Hotspurs and Young Buffaloes have started the campaign without a win, although the season remains long enough for fortunes to change.
With the league still in its infancy, no team can afford to read too much into the early table. However, the opening results have already created an intriguing battle at the top, with established giants and ambitious challengers fighting for early momentum.
For the title hopefuls, the message is clear: early points matter.
The teams that can maintain consistency, particularly against fellow contenders, could find themselves in a strong position when the championship race begins to intensify.
The MTN Premier League season is scheduled to run through May 2027, leaving plenty of football still to be played.
But after the opening exchanges, the race for the crown is already beginning to heat up.
