MBABANE – Local fashion brand Kaysescreation is set to feature at this year’s Luju Festival, bringing a unique showcase that blends African heritage with contemporary fashion.
The brand’s founder, Ntombikayise “Kayise” Maseko, spoke to Independent News about her creative journey, her inspiration, and what the public can expect from her new collection inspired by this year’s Luju Festival theme, Threads of Time.
How it all started
INTRODUCTION
“Kaysescreation comes from my name. My name is Ntombikayise so I took the Kayise and changed it a bit to Kayses which is pronounced in English. Kaysescreation is a reflection of my own unique style and cultural identity.
“As an African designer, I am deeply inspired by the vibrant colours, bold patterns, and rich history of African textiles. These elements are incorporated into my designs which often feature traditional Ankara fabrics and other culturally significant materials.”
Purpose beyond fashion
WHAT ARE THE CORE VALUES OR MISSION OF KAYSESCREATION?
“Kaysescreation is founded on the core values of creativity, sustainability, and cultural appreciation. Our mission is to design and create unique, high-quality garments that not only celebrate African heritage but also promote ethical and eco-friendly practices within the fashion industry.
“As for my Luju collection, you guys have to wait and see, but I want to express my sincere gratitude to Far East Textiles for their generous sponsorship, which has made it possible for us to create our collections using the finest fabrics. Their support has been invaluable and I’m thrilled to see our shared vision come to life on the runway.
“I also want to thank the dedicated Luju styling and advisory team for their guidance and encouragement throughout this journey. Their expertise and enthusiasm have been instrumental in helping me refine my designs and stay true to the 2025 fashion theme, Threads of Time. This theme has deeply inspired my collection as it challenges us to explore the rich history of African textiles while imagining their future in a contemporary context.”
A unique approach to fashion
WHAT MAKES YOUR CREATION UNIQUE COMPARED TO OTHERS?
“Kaysescreation stands out due to our emphasis on blending African heritage with contemporary fashion, our commitment to supporting local artisans, and our dedication to sustainability.
“We believe these factors combine to create a unique and appealing brand that resonates with people looking for something distinctive and socially conscious.”

Excitement ahead of Luju Festival
WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT FOR THIS YEAR’S LUJU FESTIVAL?
“I’m most excited about the fashion show. We have different designs and I can’t wait to see other creators and the diverse lineup of artists and performers at this year’s Luju Festival.
“It’s a rare opportunity to experience such a wide range of talent in one place, and I’m eager to discover new favourites and enjoy familiar favourites in such a lively and energetic atmosphere.”
Creative inspiration rooted in culture
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR INSPIRATION IN THIS JOURNEY OF FASHION?
“My creative journey has been shaped by a diverse array of inspirations. First and foremost, I’m deeply inspired by the rich history and cultural heritage of Africa, particularly the stories and traditions woven into its textiles.
“Additionally, I draw inspiration from the natural world, observing the beautiful patterns, colours and textures found in nature and translating them into my designs.
“Lastly, I’m continually inspired by the people around me, from fellow designers who push the boundaries of creativity to the individuals who wear my creations and bring their own unique perspectives and experiences to the designs. It’s the combination of these varied inspirations that fuels my creativity and drives me to explore new possibilities in the world of fashion.”

Overcoming challenges in fashion
WHAT CHALLENGES HAVE YOU FACED AS A CREATOR?
“Financial Constraints: Limited funds can make it difficult to invest in materials, marketing or hiring additional team members. Consider seeking alternative funding sources like grants, crowdfunding or loans.
“Time Management: Balancing creative work with administrative tasks, customer service and personal obligations can be overwhelming. Trying to prioritise tasks, delegating responsibilities, and setting realistic deadlines.
“Creative Blocks: Feeling uninspired or experiencing a lack of motivation can hinder progress. Step away from your work temporarily, explore new sources of inspiration, or collaborate with others to spark fresh ideas.
“Adapting to Change: Market trends, customer preferences, and technology are constantly evolving.”

Advice for aspiring designers
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ASPIRING CREATORS LOOKING TO GET SUCH OPPORTUNITY OF SHOWCASING AT LUJU FESTIVAL?
“I would like to encourage everyone to come out and support local fashion at the Luju Festival. It’s an incredible opportunity to witness the creativity and talent of our community, learn about African heritage and connect with others who share a passion for fashion and culture.
“I can’t wait to share my designs with you all and celebrate the vibrant threads that weave us together.”
