DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA – Television personality and choreographer Somizi Mhlongo caused a stir on Saturday at the 2025 Hollywoodbets Durban July, arriving by helicopter and delivering eight bold outfit changes in what many are calling a masterclass in fashion theatrics.
Mhlongo landed at the Greyville Racecourse flanked by an entourage that mirrored the day’s theme, Marvels of Mzansi, and immediately commanded attention with a floor-length gown plastered in real newspaper headlines. The dramatic piece, complete with puffed sleeves and a towering headpiece inscribed with “No DNA, Just RSA”, set social media alight before midday.
His wig, shaped like the African continent and coloured with South Africa’s flag, turned heads even before his first interview. “This look says I’m made in South Africa, by South Africa,” he told reporters at the venue, adding that the outfit represents cultural identity rather than biology.
Crowds gathered throughout the day, many waiting near the media tent or stage area for Somizi’s next transformation. Each hour, he reappeared in a new outfit — ranging from a warrior-themed ensemble dripping with beads, to a sparkling bodysuit paired with a flowing Ndebele cape.
Other standout looks included a reimagined disco-Xhosa fusion outfit and a final reveal said to involve moving parts.
All costumes were custom-built by a design team from Hollywood Costumes in collaboration with Somizi’s own fashion brand, Sompire. The creative team worked for weeks to bring his vision to life, reportedly rehearsing each wardrobe change to perfection.
Somizi said the intention wasn’t just to wear clothes, but to make each appearance feel like performance art.
