BARCELONA – Portuguese international and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has died in a car accident in Spain at the age of 28. His younger brother, André Jota, 26, who was also a professional footballer, died in the same incident.
Spanish authorities confirmed that the accident occurred early Tuesday morning on the A-52 highway near Palacios de Sanabria, in the province of Zamora. The vehicle they were travelling in veered off the road and caught fire on impact.
Jota, who had just helped Liverpool secure the Premier League title, was on holiday ahead of pre-season training. He had been with the English giants since 2020, making 123 appearances and scoring 47 goals. Though often used as an impact substitute, he played a crucial role under manager Arne Slot, scoring six goals and providing four assists in the 2024/2025 season.
Before joining Liverpool, he spent three successful seasons at Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he impressed with a 17-goal season in 2017–2018.
Jota was also part of super-agent Jorge Mendes’ client roster and was widely respected across European football.
His brother André was playing for Portuguese second division side Peñafiel at the time of his death.
