KUMASI, GHANA – A group of emaSwati students studying at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) were gifted E17,800 (USD1,000) each by His Majesty King Mswati III during a surprise visit to the Ghanaian university this week.
The pupils, ten in total, met the King during his tour of the campus, which he undertook alongside Inkhosikati LaMagongo. The mood turned celebratory as the students danced with the King after the Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister, Pholile Shakantu, announced the generous gift aimed at supporting their academic and living expenses.
Inkhosikati LaMagongo hugged several female students during the gathering, adding warmth to what many of them described as an unforgettable moment.
The King shared that he had received a positive report from the university’s Vice Chancellor regarding the emaSwati students’ behaviour and academic focus. He said the students were flying the national flag high by showing discipline and dedication to their studies.
He urged them to continue acting as ambassadors for Eswatini and to return home with the knowledge and experience gained to contribute towards national development.
“You will now be that link between us and the university,” the King told them, also acknowledging the respect and humility they displayed during their introductions.
His Majesty is expected to return to KNUST later this week alongside King Osei Tutu II of the Ashanti Kingdom for the final day of the university’s graduation ceremony. The event is spread over three days due to the large number of graduates.
