Kigali – Her Majesty Queen Masenate Mohato Seeiso of Lesotho spent four days in Rwanda leading a high level Gavi Mission focused on strengthening child and adolescent health systems. The visit ran from 2 to 6 December 2025 and brought together senior officials who are shaping Lesotho’s immunisation and public health agenda.
The Queen travelled with Lesotho’s Minister of Health Selibe Mochoboroane, Chieftainess Mamahali Peete Peete, representatives from Gavi and UNICEF and other senior government officials. Their work centred on studying Rwanda’s approach to vaccination and exploring models that could be adapted to improve health outcomes back home.
The delegation held a series of technical meetings with Rwanda’s health authorities, looking at how the country has managed to expand its vaccine coverage and reduce illnesses that can be prevented by routine immunisation. Lesotho’s team said they were particularly interested in Rwanda’s success with community engagement and the use of real time health data, which could support the rollout of the Human Papilloma Virus vaccine among adolescent girls.
Her Majesty toured the National Vaccine Warehouse where she was briefed on how Rwanda manages its nationwide supply chain. Officials demonstrated how vaccines are received, secured and distributed to facilities across the country.
Another stop was the National Health Intelligence Centre, a central hub that uses artificial intelligence to analyse data from community health workers, clinics and hospitals. The delegation was shown how this information guides policy development and resource allocation while strengthening disease surveillance.
The Queen also visited the Zipline drone port, where Rwanda’s use of drones to transport medical supplies has reduced delays for patients in remote communities. Lesotho has already earmarked Rapokolana as the location for its own Zipline site, with groundwork for the project reported to be progressing.
