MBABANE – June 20, 2025 — MTN Eswatini used this year’s Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) Awards Ceremony to celebrate 22 years of partnership with local football, while calling for more investment, unity, and professionalism in the sport.
Held in Mbabane, the ceremony brought together club officials, players, coaches, sponsors, and fans to celebrate a season many described as one of the most competitive in recent memory.
MTN CEO Charles Mugabe said football in Eswatini has grown into more than just a sport — it’s become a tool for bringing people together and creating economic opportunity. He spoke about MTN’s role in developing football talent, investing in infrastructure, and working with the PLE to give young players a platform to shine.
Nsingizini Hotspurs were the biggest winners of the night, receiving the Chairman’s Award after clinching the league title. Their win ended a long-standing run of dominance by clubs like Mbabane Swallows and Royal Leopard. PLE Chairman Polycarp Dlamini praised the team’s leadership and community spirit, saying the club had shown what’s possible when vision and discipline come together.
Newcomers Tambankulu Celtics and Amawele FC were applauded for earning promotion to the Premier League. Malanti Chiefs, making their return to the top flight, were also recognised for their determination and progress.
The ceremony wasn’t only about trophies. Dlamini acknowledged the challenges faced during the season — from tight budgets to discipline issues — and thanked the clubs, Eswatini Football Association, Board of Governors, and everyone behind the scenes for keeping the league running smoothly.
He also spoke about plans to crack down on violence and misconduct in the sport. The league is considering new rules, including fines and point deductions, for clubs whose fans or players cause trouble.
MTN also looked back on its recent community work, including a road-clearing project near Luhlanyeni Primary School carried out under its “21 Days of Y’ello Care” campaign. The initiative was done in partnership with the PLE and was described as a clear example of how football and corporate social responsibility can work hand-in-hand.
As the event wrapped up, both MTN and PLE urged everyone involved in the sport — from clubs to fans — to help build a more professional and inspiring football culture in Eswatini.
