MANZINI – June 20, 2025 — The Minister of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs, Bongani Nzima, has confirmed government’s commitment to restoring international football matches at Somhlolo National Stadium, as he addressed guests at the MTN Prize Presentation Ceremony held at The George Hotel.
Speaking at the awards event that brought together football officials, players, sponsors and dignitaries, Nzima said work was already underway to upgrade the iconic stadium to meet international standards. The move is aimed at allowing Eswatini to once again host teams from across the region and beyond.
Nzima praised MTN Eswatini for its long-standing investment in football, calling the partnership not only vital for the sport’s development but also for its impact on the country’s youth and national unity. He described MTN’s involvement as an important part of shaping a future where football continues to serve as both an economic and social catalyst.
He also recognised the Eswatini Football Association (EFA) and the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) for running a successful 2024 season across both the Premier League and National First Division. Nzima said the government remains ready to support upcoming seasons.
With trophies and medals handed out, Nsingizini Hotspurs were celebrated as the 2024 Premier League champions, while Malanti Chiefs were named champions of the National First Division. Both clubs were applauded for their dedication and determination throughout the season.
Turning to the broader football environment, Nzima called on clubs, executives, players and fans to take collective responsibility in protecting the sport’s reputation. He said professionalism, mutual respect and discipline on and off the pitch are essential for creating a space that inspires sponsors and keeps football growing.
He urged all teams to treat themselves as serious brands and challenged league leaders to protect those brands through proper management and ethical conduct.
The minister also thanked the media for their continued coverage of football, saying their role in telling the stories of players and clubs helps shape public support for the game.
As the night concluded with cheers for award recipients, Nzima reminded attendees to continue working together to uplift the game at all levels and wished everyone safe travels.
