MBABANE – A 33-year-old resident of Motshane who was arrested at Ngwenya Border post said he went into drug-smuggling in order to raise capital for starting a legitimate business.
Mazwe Dlamini was arrested on Saturday at the Ngwenya checkpoint. On Monday, he was charged with the offence of contravening Section 7 as read with Section 8 (1) of the Opium and Habit-Forming Drugs Act Number 37 of 1922, as amended.
According to the charge sheet, on June 14, 2025, Dlamini was found in possession of 33 vacuum bags of dagga, weighing 3.1 kilograms, without a valid permit or license.
When he appeared at the Mbabane Magistrates Court, before Magistrate C Thwala, Dlamini remarked his mitigation of the sentence and said his purpose was to raise a start-up capital so that he could establish a proper business. However, he could not say which business he intended pursuing.
He also mentioned that he had other pressing needs which involved supporting his sickly child. Moreover, the accused said both himself and the child’s mother were currently unemployed.
Dlamini was sentenced to either pay a fine of E2000 or to serve one year in prison.
