Two South African women died when a tourist minibus overturned near Moteng Pass in Lesotho on Saturday afternoon.
The crash occurred on 14 June 2025 near the village of Ha Piti in the Botha-Bothe district, as a group of tourists was returning from the popular Afriski Resort. According to a preliminary police report, the driver of the Sprinter minibus lost control of the vehicle while trying to swerve away from cattle that had wandered onto the road. The vehicle overturned, leaving two dead and several others injured.
The Lesotho Mounted Police Service has launched an investigation into the accident, which involved 20 occupants, including the driver. Two of the injured were treated at Botha-Bothe Hospital and later discharged. Two others were transferred to Bethlehem Hospital in South Africa, where one remains under medical care.
Authorities in Lesotho, including the Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation (LTDC), have expressed sorrow at the incident and extended condolences to the families of the deceased. The LTDC said they are awaiting the full findings of the police investigation and urged local tour operators and drivers to be more cautious, especially on mountainous routes such as Moteng Pass.
