MATSAPHA — The Ministry of Health has begun building Eswatini’s first world-class centralised healthcare waste treatment facility in Matsapha. The project was officially launched today by Health Minister Mduduzi Matsebula during a sod-cutting ceremony at the Matsapha Industrial Site.
Funded by the Global Fund, the new incinerator plant aims to address the longstanding challenge of safely disposing of expired medical drugs and pharmaceutical waste. Minister Matsebula said the initiative will save the government over E21 million and resolve the problem of hazardous stockpiles that have accumulated over time.
“The facility will have the capacity to treat all types of medical and pharmaceutical waste within the country,” Minister Matsebula said. “This will eliminate the costly practice of sending waste abroad for disposal and ensure compliance with environmental laws to protect our surroundings.”
The ceremony was held in partnership with Matsapha Town Council and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.
