Jericho residents have been left reeling after police revealed disturbing new details about the murder of eight-year-old Tifezile Gwebu, whose remains were discovered this week following her disappearance from Siguduma.
Senior Superintendent Phindile Vilakati returned to the grief-stricken community on Thursday, 29 May, confirming that the child’s body had been mutilated. According to her statement, Tifezile’s head was found inside a house in Jericho while her body was discovered hanging from a tree in the same area — a scene described as “too horrific to fathom.”
The discovery has sparked anger and sorrow in communities across the Shiselweni region, where residents had actively taken part in the week-long search alongside the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS). The child was last seen in the company of an unknown man on 21 May.
Police say a manhunt is now underway for the suspect. “We will not rest,” said Vilakati, urging the individual to surrender before being caught. She extended her appreciation to residents of Sahhukwane and Jericho for their unity and support during the search operation.
REPS has committed to pursuing justice for Tifezile and called on members of the public to continue working with authorities as investigations continue.
