MBABANE – Former King cattle overseer, Macaleni Dlamini, was granted E50 000 bail by the High Court on Monday.
Dlamini (Macaleni) who faces 36 stock theft and extortion charges allegedly from illegally grabbing from 18 farmers cattle to the value of E2 871 000, was told to pay E8 000 in cash and provide the remainder as surety.
Bail was granted the bail by High Court Judge Bongani Dlamini.
Nineteen of the charges he faces are for stock theft while 17 are for extortion.
Macaleni first posted bail on May 16 but was opposed by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) which was no longer the case.
He said that he was surprised to be arrested with the charges when he was doing his job.
In the case build-up, the prosecution applied to detain 173 cattle belonging to Macaleni which are kept at his home at Mafutseni, to be presented as evidence in trial.
“The herd of cattle kept at the accused’s kraal number 456/0005 under the Mzimpofu Dip Tank estimated to be 173 in number are hereby detained,” reads part of the court order.
