Mlulami Dlamini, a 45-year-old from KaMagele, Hlathikulu, is set to receive government support after building an impressive two-story house using sticks, mud, and stones all by himself. The government has pledged to construct a one-bedroom house for him, equipped with all necessary amenities.
Deputy Prime Minister Thulisile Dladla visited Dlamini’s unique home today to see the structure firsthand. Dlamini completed the house in 2016, which includes an upper-level sitting room, an ensuite bedroom, and a staircase, something he had always dreamed of. The house also has running water harvested during the rainy season and electricity. He is currently working on adding a swimming pool to the property and tends to an orchard full of fruit trees, sweet potatoes, and cassava.
Despite the accomplishments, Dlamini shared that the house needs some maintenance, with leaks and damp areas in some parts of the building. He mentioned that taking care of the home often prevents him from focusing on other important tasks around the house and expressed his wish for a steady income to help maintain it.
The Deputy Prime Minister praised Dlamini for his self-taught skills in construction, plumbing, wiring, and farming. She said that the government, through the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), will build him a new one-bedroom house with proper plumbing and wiring, ensuring a safer and more comfortable living space.
Dladla also revealed that her office would help facilitate an IQ assessment for Dlamini, with plans to provide training that would align with his natural talents. She commended Dlamini as a true innovator, calling him a “genius” and expressing admiration for his rare mix of talents. A local businessman also recently donated aluminum windows to assist with the upkeep of the house.
