Mbabane – In a surprising turn of events, Melusi Dlamini, a 28-year-old self-identified drug addict, requested to be sent to a rehabilitation facility during his court appearance on charges of housebreaking. The case was heard by Principal Magistrate Fikile Nhlabatsi.
Dlamini, who worked as a groundsman for Mncobi Motsa, was arrested on Monday after unlawfully entering his employer’s home in Hawane. He was charged with stealing 15 items valued at E3,190.
Among the stolen items were a door worth E900, a pick priced at E350, a duvet costing E300, toiletries worth E100, along with various clothing items including a T-shirt, two pairs of shorts, and construction trousers.
Upon his guilty plea, Dlamini expressed a desire for change, acknowledging his struggle with smoking and alcohol. When asked about his smoking habits, he confirmed them but indicated a commitment to seek help, mentioning the possibility of consulting a pastor or finding alternative methods to quit.
Despite his request for rehabilitation, the court sentenced him to pay a fine of E2000 or face two years in prison. Additionally, Magistrate Nhlabatsi instructed Dlamini to cut his hair and return to court, demonstrating his dedication to overcoming his addiction.
