MASERU, April 23, 2025 — Government ministers from Lesotho and South Africa convened in Maseru for the second session of the Bi-National Commission (BNC) Council of Ministers, reaffirming their countries’ shared goals of regional stability, economic collaboration, and coordinated security efforts.
The high-level meeting was led by Lesotho’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Hon. Lejone Mpotjoane, and his South African counterpart, Hon. Ronald Lamola, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation. Delegations from both countries gathered to review the progress made since the BNC’s first session in Pretoria and to chart a clear path forward.

Mpotjoane spoke of the enduring relationship between the two nations, rooted in cultural and linguistic kinship. He proposed a formal structure to monitor the implementation of decisions taken at the BNC, suggesting it would help both countries respond to challenges with greater speed and coordination.
Minister Lamola pointed to key issues on the agenda, including trade, cross-border crime, and migration. He urged full commitment from government institutions to turn discussions into results, especially in tackling illegal mining and improving the ease of movement and commerce across borders.
