Lubombo Region, Eswatini – His Majesty King Mswati III has outlined Eswatini’s strategy to accelerate industrialisation through the construction of at least 10 factory shells annually. Speaking at the launch of the Gamula factory shell in the Lubombo region, the King described the initiative as a key driver of economic growth and job creation.
The Gamula facility, operated by textile company Smartware, is expected to employ 1,000 emaSwati at full capacity. It also includes a modern clinic to cater to workers’ healthcare needs. According to the King, expanding industrial infrastructure will not only create employment but also integrate advanced technology, offering young professionals opportunities to apply their skills.
“For us to attain first-world status, we must have industries,” he stated. “These projects incorporate modern technology, allowing emaSwati in technology fields to gain practical experience.”

The King also acknowledged the contributions of farmers and cooperatives in Gamula, praising their role in enhancing food security. He encouraged them to diversify into cotton farming to support the textile sector. Additionally, he urged local authorities, imiphakatsi, to allocate farmland for citizens, enabling them to secure financial support for agricultural ventures.
The industrial expansion aligns with Eswatini’s Decentralisation Programme, which includes the newly launched Ndzevane factory shell, also in the Lubombo region. Occupied by Sigma Clothing, the facility is set to employ 1,000 emaSwati in its first phase. The King noted that such projects bring essential infrastructure, including water, sanitation, and electricity, benefiting surrounding communities by making services more accessible and affordable.
“We now hand over this project to the community,” he stated, reinforcing the role of factory shells in job creation and poverty alleviation.
