Eswatini among 21 African countries with no Covid-19 deaths so far

Mbabane: At the height of the widespread of the deadly COVID – 19 that has killed over 82 000 people globally, Eswatini has not recorded any death as of April 8, 2020.

The Kingdom of Eswatini is among the 52 countries in the region that has confirmed COVID-19 positive cases. According to the Africa Centre for Disease Control (CDC), as of April 8, 2020, 10am, 10,267 total COVID-19 cases and 492 deaths have been reported in the 52 African countries.

Of the over 10,267 confirmed cases, Eswatini accounts to only 10 COVID-19 cases but with no deaths as yet. The Kingdom is among 21 other African countries that have not recorded any deaths so far.

 The Ministry of Health on April 6, 2020, in a press conference announced that Eswatini has received a 10th confirmed case, which was reportedly a 31 year old female from Manzini Region who had arrived in the country on March 24, 2020 from the Republic of South Africa, Gauteng province where she is employed.

The other countries in the same bracket as Eswatini are; Central African Republic, Réunion, Guinea, Rwanda, Djibouti, Madagascar, Uganda, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, Equatorial Guinea, Namibia, Seychelles, Mozambique, Chad, Somalia, Sierra Leone, Sao Tome & Principe, Western Sahara, Burundi and South Sudan.

In the lead with the highest number of confirmed cases is South Africa with over 1749, with thirteen deaths.

Globally, a total of 1,434,235 coronavirus (COVID-19) cases have been confirmed with over 82,143 related deaths being reported to date.

Country-Specific Information:

  • Eswatini has ten confirmed cases of COVID-19 cases within its borders.

Entry and Exit Requirements:

  • The Eswatini government has advised people to defer non-essential trips to mainland China.
  • American Citizens traveling from COVID-19 high risk countries are restricted from entering Eswatini until further notice.
  • American Citizens visiting Eswatini as tourists should plan to depart the country by March 20, 2020.
  • South Africa is requiring visas for American Citizens.
  • At Eswatini’s main border posts (currently Oshoek and King Mswati III International Airport), there are ongoing screening processes for persons who have recently travelled to mainland China.
  • Some land border posts have been closed, including Sicunisa, Gege, Lundzi, Sandlane, Bulembu, and Nsalitje.

Quarantine Information:

  • Persons exposed to an individual with possible infection are requested to self-quarantine for 14 days with follow-up by the Ministry of Health.
