Mbabane: The first Anglican Church Female Bishop Ellinah Wamukoya has passed away on Tuesday aged 70 after contracting COVID-19.

Wamukoya died on Tuesday morning. The sad news of her death was announced by Archbishop Thabo Makgoba of Cape Town, Primate of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa.

Announcing the sad news Archbishob Thabo Makgoba said “It is with profound sorrow that I have to announce the devastating news that the Bishop of Eswatini, the Right Reverend Ellinah Wamukoya, died today”. “We express our deepest condolences to her husband, Okwaro Henry Wamukoya, their children and grandchildren. May her soul rest in peace?”

Reverend Advent Dlamini who is the  Diocese of Eswatini, Anglican church of Southern Africa issued a statement  saying “ The Diocese of Eswatini (Anglican Church) would like to officially inform His Majesty’s Government, Her Membership, The Province His Grace, The archbishop of Cape Town and Metropolitan of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa, Companions (Diocese of Brechin Iowa and Highveld) and the entire nation of Eswatini that the Right Reverend Elllinah Wamukoya has been recalled by her maker on Tuesday 19 January 2021 at 6:30am. More details will follow”, reads the statement.

Ellinah Ntombi Wamukoya was born in born 1951. She was the first woman to be elected as a bishop of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa and of the whole African continent, as the diocesan bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Eswatini. She kept this position until her death in 2021. Wamukoya Succeede Meshack Mabuza as Anglican Bishob of Eswatini after winning elections in the elective assembly in July 2012

Wamukoya studied at the universities of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland. She was the chaplain of the University of Swaziland and of St. Michael’s High School, in Manzini, as well as Town Clerk and CEO of the City Council of Manzini when she was elected.
