LUYENGO – What started as a childhood passion has grown into a creative outlet and source of income for Tabiwe Nhlabatsi, popularly known as Tabiwe Tk, who has turned crocheting into both a craft and a fashion statement.
Born in Maloma and currently based in Luyengo, Nhlabatsi has been passionate about crochet since her primary school days. However, it was during the COVID-19 lockdown that she decided to take the craft more seriously.
“I was bored and broke during the lockdown period, so I thought, why not try crocheting again?” she said.
With little more than an internet connection and a willingness to learn, Nhlabatsi turned to YouTube, where she downloaded crochet tutorials and began teaching herself the basics. Her first project was a crocheted top, which she proudly shared on her WhatsApp status.
The response was overwhelmingly positive, giving her the confidence to continue creating. She soon began producing more pieces and selling them through Facebook.
For Nhlabatsi, crochet is more than simply making clothing. She values the personal touch that comes with creating every piece by hand.
“With crochet, every piece is handmade, so it carries the time, love and effort I put into each project,” she explained.
Her passion for fashion has also influenced her work, particularly because crochet allows her to design and make clothes that reflect her personality.
“My designs are inspired by everyday fashion and my own creativity,” she said. “Crochet gives me the freedom to express myself because I can customise almost everything, from the colours and patterns to the style and fit.”
Among the projects that have tested her patience was a granny-square cardigan. Creating the individual squares, sewing them together and shaping the final garment proved to be a demanding process. However, seeing the finished product made the challenge worthwhile.
Beyond creativity, crocheting has also contributed to Nhlabatsi’s personal growth and finances. As a tertiary student, the income she earns from her work helps with everyday expenses such as data and food.
She believes aspiring crocheters should not be afraid of making mistakes. Her advice is simple: start, remain patient and use available resources such as YouTube to learn the basics.
With her growing passion for fashion and crochet, Tabiwe Tk continues to turn yarn into unique pieces while expressing her creativity one stitch at a time.
