Portugal boss Roberto Martinez has backed Cristiano Ronaldo to feature at the 2030 World Cup.
Ronaldo himself has previously said that winning the World Cup or not will define his legacy but as comparisons to rival Lionel Messi continue, many feel he needs to lift the tournament to match the former Barcelona star for accolades.
This may be the Al-Nassr superstar’s final chance to win the tournament however, as he enters this summer’s World Cup at 41 years old.
Despite this, Martinez believes that age is just a number as he backs his star man to not only shine in the upcoming World Cup but also in 4 years time at the next one.
“We’ve come to a conclusion: I believe Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t play to win a specific title, either collectively or individually. His secret isn’t what he eats, it’s his hunger.
“Whatever he wins, the next day he has the same hunger to improve. I think having that objective allows for longevity.
“I’ve worked with many, many players who, the day after winning a UEFA Champions League or a Ballon d’Or, don’t have the same hunger.”
On the World Cup in 2030: “He will fight for it. I think no one should doubt that, at least he has earned that right.
“Don’t think that this isn’t a topic of discussion and conversation within the coaching staff, because we would love to be able to pass on Cristiano Ronaldo’s example to all young footballers in Portugal.”
Portugal will kick off their Group K campaign against Congo in Houston as Ronaldo enters his sixth World Cup, with the feat having never previously been achieved before this summer.
