Mbabane – His Majesty’s Correctional Services (HMCS) mediation initiative enables victims and criminals to discuss forgiveness for wrongdoing.
HMCS Deputy Public Relations Officer Assistant Chief Officer Baphelele Kunene stated that as part of the rehabilitation process, they had the Victim-Offender Mediation (VOM) programme, which is one of many for the inmates’ rehabilitation journey.
Kunene said these engagements are always done under guard and/or supervision, allowing inmates “the opportunity to meet their victims or families” through the VOM programme.
He stated that the HMCS thinks that any rehabilitation endeavour is a step toward achieving positive outcomes through this programme.
“HMCS remains committed to balancing public safety with regard for victims and families, human rights, cultural values, and effective rehabilitation, guided by national laws, correctional policies, and the cultural ethos of the Kingdom of Eswatini,” he said. Kunene also highlighted that the participation of inmates in approved cultural activities was carefully managed, supervised, and undertaken strictly within the framework of correctional rehabilitation.
“We therefore urge the public to view this initiative not as a compromise of justice, but as an investment in rehabilitation, transformation, and long-term social harmony,” Kunene said.
