Washington DC – Mexico will play the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against South Africa at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on June 11, 2026. The draw, held on December 5, 2025, at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., also placed Mexico in Group A alongside South Korea and a team from the UEFA Playoff D, which will be one of Denmark, Republic of Ireland, Czech Republic, or North Macedonia.

The tournament, which will be jointly hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada, marks Mexico’s third time as a World Cup host, with the country’s best performances coming in 1970 and 1986, when it reached the quarter-finals. Mexico automatically qualified as a co-host for this expanded 48-team World Cup.

Mexico’s full group-stage schedule includes games across two cities: Mexico City and Guadalajara. The host nation will hope for a strong performance at home, building on its historic World Cup pedigree, despite a disappointing early exit from the 2022 tournament in Qatar.
