Mbabane – The U.S. Embassy in Eswatini officially launched a $12,000 Alumni Grant at American Corner Mbabane, located in the Mbabane Public Library, aimed at empowering alumni of U.S. government exchange programs to drive innovation, leadership, and civic engagement across the country. The initiative is a joint effort of the U.S. Mission Eswatini and the U.S. Government Exchange Programs Alumni Association.
Over the next 12 months, alumni will implement projects in leadership development, STEM mentorship, entrepreneurship, and initiatives tied to America250 celebrations and major sporting events. American Corners in Mbabane, Manzini, and soon Nhlangano will serve as hubs for these activities, providing resources such as iPads, PlayStations, studio equipment, and high-speed Wi-Fi to support young people in their communities.
Carly Van Orman, Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy Eswatini, said the program represents a shift from aid dependency to partnership. “While we are here to stand with Eswatini and support local initiatives, it is important for the country to build its own capacity,” she explained. Van Orman added that the program reflects the embassy’s ongoing commitment to collaboration, innovation, and building stronger U.S.–Eswatini connections. She also noted that 2025 marks the 250th anniversary of the United States, offering additional opportunities for engagement throughout the year.
The launch was attended by U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Marc Weinstock, who joined embassy officials and alumni in marking the milestone.

Bertha Sithole, Chairperson of the Alumni Association, said the program’s objectives include fostering entrepreneurship, promoting STEM education, strengthening alumni engagement, and using sports diplomacy to empower the next generation of Eswatini leaders. Sithole explained that the alumni network includes participants from Fulbright, YALI, IVLP, and other U.S. government exchange programs, many of whom now serve in government, civil society, education, business, and industry.
“The U.S. Embassy has recognized the importance of American Corners and provided the resources to implement these projects, from funding to equipment in this space,” Sithole said. She added that the association has over 1,200 members, with alumni spanning programs dating back as far as 1980.
