Mbabane – The National Emergency Response Council on HIV and AIDS (NERCHA) joined the country in celebrating the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, coinciding with Parliament Wellness Day. This day served as a reminder that disability does not equate to inability, while underscoring the importance of wellness for everyone in society.
Dr. Bongani Masango, Director of HIV Response and Coordination at NERCHA, represented the National Executive Director during the event. He praised Parliament for championing wellness among lawmakers and staff, setting an example for the nation.
Speaking on behalf of the NED, Dr. Masango emphasized the role of Parliament in ensuring disability-inclusive policies are passed, funded, and implemented across various sectors, including health and HIV. He reiterated NERCHA’s commitment to the National Multisectoral HIV and AIDS Strategic Framework (2024–2028), which aims to ensure that no one is left behind, including those living with disabilities, in remote areas, or facing social and economic hardships.
Dr. Masango stressed that achieving a transformed HIV response requires accessible services, stronger referral pathways, inclusive communication materials, and active participation from persons with disabilities in program development.
Deputy Prime Minister Senator Thuli Dladla also commended NERCHA for its involvement in the commemoration, urging the removal of barriers preventing people with disabilities from accessing essential HIV services.
NERCHA also set up an information stall during the event to provide attendees with important resources and information on HIV prevention and care.
