Mafutseni – The long-awaited Siphumelele low-level crossing project is officially underway following a successful launch by the Ministry of Economic Planning and Development in collaboration with the Microprojects Programme and Mafutseni Inkhundla.
During the launching ceremony, residents were informed that construction is expected to begin within 14 days. Officials outlined the project’s objectives, timelines, and the important role the community will play throughout the construction phase.
Microprojects confirmed that the construction process has been fully approved and commended residents for their proactive efforts in collecting stones as part of the mandatory 10% community contribution. The programme encouraged continued participation to ensure the project stays on track.
Before work begins, environmental assessments will be carried out to ensure the crossing is built in line with environmental standards and safety requirements.Community members were also briefed on their responsibilities, which include clearing shrubs around the site, organising themselves into working groups, and assisting with drainage and gabion construction when guided by the contractor.
The appointed contractor, Home Boyz Construction, was introduced to the community and urged residents to cooperate fully and use project tools responsibly to maintain progress and safety throughout the construction period.
Mafutseni Member of Parliament, Hon. Sabelo Mthethwa, welcomed the launch, describing it as another major step in the inkhundla’s development efforts. He encouraged residents to remain united and to support the project from start to finish, noting that Mafutseni has recorded significant development achievements this year.
Once completed, the Siphumelele Low-Level Crossing is expected to greatly improve accessibility for residents, transport operators and emergency services by providing a safer and more reliable route across the area.
