Premier League of Eswatini, Chief Operations Officer - Pat Vilakati

Mbabane: Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) teams have less than E600 000 to dig-into for ‘operation football restart’.

This is far less than the E1.2 million PLE Board of Governors (BOGs) thought they could access to begin their respective clubs preparations for the resumption of football. The E600 000 meant for the utilization of the PLE for its development leagues is a grant from mother-body, Eswatini Football Association (EFA).

If E600 000 was to be shared equally among the 26 PLE teams, each club was to get just over E23 000. But that is not the case.

PLE Chief Operations Officer (COO) Pat Vilakati clarified that the first installment of E300 000 has already been tempered with as PLE Development Leagues had a few activities at the beginning of the season. After the PLE BOGs meeting, it was agreed that that the EFA grant must be channeled to teams for them to kick-start preparations for the football season resumption.

“I will have to consult with our finance officer but the money is less than the E600 000 EFA grant,” Vilakati said.

EFA suspended football activities in March amid the worldwide spread of the novel coronavirus but is already planning to resume with a four-phase strategy already in place.

Vilakati added that the money will come with strict conditions obviously for reasons that clubs’ expenditures vary. What for example is spent by Mbabane Swallows monthly on salaries, accommodation and transport among other expenses is not the same as that spent by Pigg’s Peak Black Swallows.

“Teams will have to submit tangible evidence on their respective expenditures and they will not be getting an equal share,” Vilakati said.
