Doha – Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani has warned that his country will retaliate against Israel following an airstrike in Doha that targeted Hamas’s political leadership.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, al-Thani said Qatar “will reserve the right to retaliate and will take all the needed measures” in response to the strike, which he described as an act of state terrorism.
He announced that the Minister of State will convene a meeting on Wednesday to review national policies and measures aimed at preventing such actions in the future.
Al-Thani accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of threatening regional security and violating the sovereignty of neighbouring nations. “There should be retaliation from the whole region in the face of those barbaric actions,” he said, adding that Israel’s actions disregarded international law.
The strike, carried out on Tuesday, marked an escalation in Israel’s war against Hamas and appeared to end negotiations for the release of hostages—talks that had been hosted by Qatar.
Despite the warning of retaliation, al-Thani insisted his country would continue its diplomatic role in the region. “Mediation and Qatari diplomacy is part of its identity, and it will continue… in order to achieve the stability of the region and ultimately the stability of our peoples,” he said.
