Mbabane – The University of Eswatini (UNESWA) has incorporated the life and political journey of exiled former Siphofaneni Member of Parliament Mduduzi ‘Gawuzela’ Simelane into its history curriculum.
The Faculty of Humanities’ Department of History has profiled Simelane’s activism and his role in advocating for political reforms in Eswatini. This marks the second project by the university dedicated to his life, following earlier research on his charity work through the Makhelwane Simbona Ngetento initiative.
Simelane described the recognition as humbling, saying it reminded him of the importance of shared history. “It is humbling to see, for the second time, university students dedicating their time to study the impact of my life on society. The first work focused on Makhelwane Simbona Ngetento charity initiatives, and this recently completed project has once again reminded me of the value of shared history,” he said.
He also praised the accuracy of the work, noting that the biographical details faithfully reflected his life and political contributions. “I sincerely thank the students and their lecturers for profiling my contribution. My deepest appreciation goes to my peers and colleagues from primary school, high school, tertiary education, the teaching fraternity, and even Hon. MPs whose sharp memories amazed me. The way they recalled our past and supported the students with vital information is truly remarkable. Some aspects of my high school and tertiary life I had forgotten myself, until I read this mind-blowing compilation,” Simelane added.
