Soweto – Orlando Pirates have received a $2 million (over R35 million) offer from Major League Soccer side Minnesota United for Bafana Bafana winger Relebohile Mofokeng, according to US journalist Tom Bogert. Talks between the club and the MLS side are ongoing.
The 20-year-old attacker had a standout season with Pirates, earning nominations for both Footballer and Player’s Player of the Season at the Premier Soccer League Awards. He won the MTN8 Last Man Standing award and the Betway Premiership Young Player of the Season.
If the deal proceeds, Mofokeng would join fellow South African winger Bongokuhle Hlongwane at Minnesota United. Hlongwane, who moved from Maritzburg United (now Durban City) in 2020, has been a regular starter for the club.
Before this, Mofokeng was linked with Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ettifaq, which reportedly offered R31 million, an approach Pirates reportedly rejected. Minnesota United see the youngster as a U-22 initiative and have been long-time admirers of his talent.
