MBABANE – WASH professionals from the Department of Water Affairs and Environmental Health have started specialised training in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to boost service delivery across Eswatini.
The programme, launched on Monday, July 21, by Chief Water Engineer Musawekhosi Mwelase, is designed to build long-term capacity within the department. The initiative is being supported by the people of Japan through UNICEF.
Held in Mbabane, the training aims to help staff interpret spatial data and better understand the needs of different communities. By using GIS tools, they will be able to make evidence-based decisions when planning water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) interventions.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Energy says this marks a shift toward more targeted and transparent services in the sector. Participants will be equipped to tackle challenges like waterborne disease outbreaks and unequal access to clean water.
Officials say the training aligns with the broader goal of making WASH services more inclusive, especially in remote and underserved areas, where data-driven solutions can help close long-standing service gaps.
