MBABANE – Renowned South African evangelist and Assemblies of God leader Dr Simon Dingane Gumbi has died at the age of 66 after a prolonged illness.
The news was announced on Monday, July 14, by his spiritual son, Bishop ND Nhlapho, who confirmed the passing on behalf of the Gumbi family and the Assemblies of God church.
A respected voice across the southern African Christian community, Dr Gumbi was known for his powerful preaching, pioneering role in church leadership, and influence on generations of ministers. He co-founded and served as a senior pastor and executive member of the Assemblies of God in South Africa.
Beyond the pulpit, Dr Gumbi was also a gospel composer and producer, having led the award-winning S.O.S Choir since 1984. Their hit album Hamba Mzalwane achieved platinum status and became a staple in African gospel households.
His ministry extended to marriage counselling, public speaking, and mentoring young preachers. Among those who counted him as a spiritual father is Bishop Nhlapho of God Never Fails Ministries.
Church leaders across the region described Dr Gumbi as a “baobab tree” whose legacy will continue to inspire. His death has sent ripples across the Christian community, with tributes pouring in from Eswatini, South Africa and beyond.
