Lusaka – The first Africa Digital Parliamentary Summit opened yesterday in Lusaka, Zambia, bringing together lawmakers from across the continent to explore the impact of artificial intelligence (AI), data governance, and digital health on the future of Africa.
The three-day gathering, which runs until 11 July, is a joint initiative of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), the Africa Population and Health Research Centre (APHRC), and global mobile network association GSMA.
Members of key PAP committees — including Transport, Industry, Communications, Energy, Science and Technology, and Health, Labour and Social Affairs — are taking part in the sessions. They are joined by representatives from African Union institutions, researchers, and digital policy analysts.
The summit includes dedicated training on AI, data privacy, and protection, tailored for African legislators. Parliamentarians are also reviewing two key reports: the Africa Digital Health report co-authored by APHRC and GSMA, and the GSMA-led Smart Manufacturing report.
