MBABANE – The security guard, Mbongiseni Mhlanga (43), accused of setting on fire five tractors belonging to Ngonini Estates that are worth over E4 million, has been granted E50,000 bail by the High Court.

Mhlanga gained his liberation on Friday by Judge Nkosinathi Maseko after the condition that he must pay E5,000 cash and provide sureties for the remaining amount.

Mhlanga said he supports an unemployed wife and eight children—five of whom are still in school.

He was arrested on April 27, 2025 and faces charges of malicious damage to property as well as possession of 2.3 kilograms of dagga.

The arson attack incident occurred on April 26, when he was on duty where he allegedly caused damage estimated at E4.1 million.

Mhlanga is also accused of contravening the Opium and Habit Forming Drug Act of 1922 for illegal possession of dagga in Sidwashini, Hhohho region.

In court, Mhlanga denied responsibility for damaging the company’s property but admitted he would plead guilty to drug possession.

He was detained at Pigg’s Peak Correctional Services.

His attorney argued that his client deserved bail on the basis of his constitutional right and the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.

He also highlighted the hardship his detention brought to his family.

As the family’s sole breadwinner, his incarceration has threatened their welfare.

Mhlanga assured the court of his full cooperation with the police and vowed not to evade trial.

He pledged not to interfere with witnesses or evidence and even offered to relocate temporarily to ensure a smooth trial process.

After considering these submissions, the High Court exercised its powers under Section 95 of the Criminal Procedure and Evidence Act 67/1938 and found it appropriate to grant bail.
