Mbabane – The High Commission of India in Mbabane is actively promoting the United Nations International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2025, with a series of sessions held across Eswatini leading up to the main event on June 21. The initiative aims to share the benefits of yoga for physical and mental well-being with emaSwati.
The IDY, observed annually on June 21, was proposed by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014 and has since become a global movement. This year’s theme is “Yoga for One Earth, One Health.”
Locally, the High Commission began its IDY 2025 outreach on April 7 with a session at Ekuphileni Wellness Centre, led by Iyengar Yoga certified teacher Ms. Julie Hertslet. On May 2, the UN House hosted a well-attended session for staff and other yoga enthusiasts. An “open for all” event at the Temple Hall in Matsapha on May 25 drew over 150 participants. Most recently, on June 4, officers at Her Majesty’s Correctional Service in Matsapha participated in a session, which was highly praised by the Deputy Commissioner General. Further sessions are being planned for students at various schools.
The High Commission has also launched a social media campaign on X, Facebook, and Instagram, posting a different yoga pose daily since June 1.
The main IDY 2025 event will take place on June 21 at Coronation Park in Mbabane. The free session, organised in coordination with the Municipal Council of Mbabane and Ms. Julie Hertslet, requires registration via a QR code or link provided in the invitation.
Given the prevalence of lifestyle-related disorders such as hypertension, anxiety, diabetes, and obesity in Eswatini, the High Commission encourages everyone to embrace yoga. This ancient Indian practice offers a flexible and holistic approach to health, with benefits often seen within days. Individuals with serious ailments should consult their doctors if needed.
