JOHANNESBURG – South Africa’s historical drama Shaka iLembe is set to return to screens with a much-anticipated second season, premiering on Sunday, 15 June at 8pm on Mzansi Magic.
The first season, which became a continental phenomenon, swept 12 South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) and ignited widespread conversations online, earning its place as a standout production in African television. The series, set in pre-colonial southern Africa, follows the life and rise of Zulu King Shaka kaSenzangakhona.
Season two picks up as Shaka arrives at KwaNobamba to claim his title as king. Viewers will follow his evolution from a feared warrior into a calculating and powerful ruler, navigating shifting alliances and battles to build his empire.
Returning to the cast is Lemogang Tsipa as Shaka, with SAFTA-winning Thembinkosi Mthembu reprising his role as King Dingiswayo. The second season promises a broader scope, introducing new characters and territories, including settings in the Swati kingdom and Xhosa nation.
“This is a journey into the very soul of Shaka’s world,” said Nomsa Philiso, CEO of General Entertainment at MultiChoice, who described the new season as an exploration of Shaka’s role not just as a fighter but as a visionary leader. Executive Producer Desiree Markgraaff added that the expanded cast brings fresh talent and deeper storytelling.
For Eswatini viewers, where stories of regional royals are followed with deep interest, the portrayal of kingdoms like the Swati nation adds an extra layer of relevance and cultural connection.
Those who missed the debut season can still catch up. Season 1 is available for streaming on Showmax and airs weekly on Mzansi Wethu (DStv channel 163 or GOtv channel 3) every Sunday at 9pm.
Shaka iLembe Season 2 officially begins its next chapter on 15 June at 8pm, only on Mzansi Magic.
