Amazulu Traditional Prime Minister Mangosuthu Buthelezi

DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA: The crowing of King Misuzulu yesterday marked the Zulu nations’ appointment with destiny.

This was the assertion of kwaZulu natal traditional Prime Minister Mangosuthu Buthelezi, who has been instrumental in ensuring the transition of power in the factional Zulu royal household.

Buthelezi, who has served the monarchy for 68 years, introduced King Misuzulu with a history of the monarch and how he (Buthelezi) got to serve in various roles under previous kings. He said the 9th king was in their midst and they all owe allegiance to him.

Buthelezi then implored upon the king to feel free to appoint a new prime minister as he believes he had played his part.

“I will continue to serve at His Majesty’s pleasure, yet I have appealed to his father and I appeal to His Majesty today to feel free to appoint his own Prime Minister. Ultimately I will have peace for I know that well beyond my lifetime, our journey will continue to be expressed through our monarch Your Majesty, “he said.

He thanked all amaZulu for the support during the transition period which he said sustained and gave him and the king strength to keep fighting for the good of the nation and sanction of the kingship.

“Today’s ceremony is not about the appointment of one man. It is about the nations’ appointment with destiny. May the reign of our ninth king be marked by hope and unity. May it be a time of healing and a time of growth and thriving; and a time of peace,” he said.

Addressing the king, Buthelezi said it is the king alone who would decide on the course of his reign. He quoted William Hendy, who wrote; “I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of myself”.

He further said they were encouraged to see the king follow in the footsteps of his fathers’ values and traditions over the past few months.

“His emphasis on food security, his fight against gender based violence and his mentorship of young men, these are all deeply encouraging Your Majesty.”

He recalled that his father was never shy to emphasise his dependency on God.

“We know that each monarchy leave his or her own legacy. In generations to come, may His Majesty’s legacy be spoken of with gratitude. “May he strengthen the Zulu kingdom and help to rebuild what has been broken through poverty, hardship and unrest. May his leadership shine through the darkness, radiating a light to guide us all,” he said
