NDMA signs Memorandum of Understanding with IDM

Mbabane: The National Disaster Management Agency, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Institute of Development Management IDM.

The purpose of the MoU is to collaborate in the design and delivery of a Disaster Risk Reduction Educational Programme (DRRE Programme). Also the MoU will contribute to the enhancing of the management of disaster risk as well as contribute to the limiting of the impact of disasters associated with natural and manmade hazards in the Kingdom of Eswatini communities, through educating and consulting services.

Delivering his remarks during the signing, NDMA CEO Russell Dlamini said NDMA wants to build capacity to the masses on what exactly Disaster Risk Management is. “We Want to do that through a professional course by the local institution, a professional course that will be recognised and accredited by the relevant accrediting institutions in the country.” He added that the program will be done jointly with NDMA. He further mentioned that It is NDMA’s wish to start by training at least 500 of government planners, economist, senior staff members, before we go out to private institutions. When we train government senior employees, it will Fast-track mainstreaming of Disaster Risk Management within government.”

IDM country Director, Dr. Ndiphethe Mabila said IDM was very pleased to work with NDMA on educating Emaswati about Disaster Risk Management. “Climate change is becoming a norm, as a country we need to understand and learn Disaster Risk Management. We also want to work with NDMA in reducing Disasters.”

The areas of collaboration and partnership between the two entities shall include; providing a Disaster Risk Reduction Educational Programme within IDM; facilitating capacity building initiatives and programmes aimed at institutional strengthening, mitigation capacity and decreasing communities vulnerabilities to priority risks and hazards within the Kingdom; identifying and undertaking priority research , innovation and applications in disaster risk management; providing leadership development, capacity enhancement and best practice in disaster risk management including early warning; undertaking consultancies in Disaster Risk Reduction and the implementation of disaster risk reduction plans and awareness, assessments and modelling of hazards and risks for early warning, early action and policy briefs; developing and writing proposals for Disaster Risk Reduction resource mobilisation; creating a centre of excellence in DRR science within the Kingdom of Eswatini, as well as undertaking other DRR exchange programs approved as suitable by both parties.
