Mbabane: Tertiary students will receive their allowances month-end.

In a press statement, Principal Secretary (PS) John Hlophe said, “The Ministry of Labour and Social Security informs all students studying in local tertiary institutions and supported through the Government Scholarship Programme of the following: The disbursement of Student Assistance Allowances is on course and will be paid as scheduled on January 30, 2022.”

Hlophe said the allowances will cover the period from the beginning of the academic year 2021/22 to date. However, he said the payments will be expended to on-going students only as the ministry is yet to receive invoices from tertiary institutions to facilitate disbursement for first-year students.

The PS highlighted, “Students Study Loan awards for the current year 2021/22 have been concluded. The ministry informs all students and/or prospective applicants that no further award of scholarships for the academic year will be made for local institutions.”

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Cleopas Dlamini after a Cabinet retreat on Friday said government is aware of the challenges faced by the education sector and is in the process of rehabilitating schools that were recently damaged.

On scholarships, Dlamini said, “Government will continue to support emaSwati students studying locally and abroad, subject to the availability of funds.”

He also indicated, “Government recognizes the impact of unemployment on the country’s socio-economic status. We, however, appreciate the creation of 52 789 permanent and 979 temporary jobs between 2018 and March 2022. This is, however, against the loss of many jobs due to COVID-19 and the social unrest that took place last year. This coming financial year, we project the creation of 9 055 new jobs from new and expanding investments.”
