Mbabane: Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC) has launched the 2021 earth hour which is scheduled to take place on the 27th of March 2021, under the theme #ConnecttoEarth. Let’s Action, and targets to save about 20 Megawatts (MW).
With the prevailing Covid-19 situation the launch was held virtually and was attended by officially from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Energy, Officially from Eswatini Environmental Authority (EEA), Earth hour partners as well as officials from EEC.
The earth hour is an initiative aimed to sensitize the public on the responsible consumption of electricity to save the environment. The event is held around the world annually encouraging individuals, communities, and businesses to turn off non-essential electric lights, for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. as a symbol of commitment to the planet.
In Eswatini the earth our event is organized by the Eswatini Electricity Company. Speaking during the virtual lunch that was held on Monday morning the Vusi Gama, acting Managing Director at Eswatini Electricity Company encouraged EmaSwati to join the world on the 27th March 2021 and observe the Earth Hour from 8:30 to 9:30pm by switching off non-essential lights and appliances.
Gama said EEC appreciated the commitments made towards environmental protection demonstrated over the past years and even amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
He said the whole world is facing the climate change crises and in the recent months the country extensive rains and floods which has disrupted essential infrastructure, affected the economy and human lives
Climate change affects all sectors, health agriculture, peace and the economy. Therefore Eswatini needs to be proactive come up with prevention, mitigation and adaptation measures for climate change and develop disaster management strategies and emergency preparedness plans.
Gama said they have noted the increasing participation of the nation in the Earth Hour initiative over the year since we started nine years go. “Let us spread the gospel and have more EmaSwati taking action against climate change”, he said.
According to information sourced from the earth hour website, it says the next decade and beyond is at stake. 2021 presents an incredible opportunity to push world leaders into action.
In a few months’ time, representatives from all over the globe will be attending the 15th meeting of the United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP 15) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Kunming, China.
The state of nature and biodiversity will be the focus for this conference, and global plans will be made for the next 10 years – decisions that will affect not only the next decade, but our future and well-being for many years to come. With enough public support, this conference could be the conference where we secure an international commitment – signed by world leaders – to end nature loss and put our planet on the path to recovery by 2030.
