Mbabane: TIBIYO TakaNgwane Managing Director Dr Absalom Themba Dlamini turns 70 today, December 1.

The former Prime Minister was born on December 1, 1950. Celebrations for the MD’s birthday are slated for today at his other home at Sidvokodvo, also in the Manzini region.

Sources close to the MD said only selected people will be present including high ranking officials in various arenas of corporations, including the political departments.

Asked why the celebrations were not shifted to the weekend where invited guests would not be hindered to attend due to work the source said in fact, today, December 1 is perfect considering that few people would help in adhering to the government’s Covid-19 regulations where a lot of people in one place are not allowed.

On another hand, the former PM has revealed that he is on the verge of releasing a book which will recount his life and times. However, he said he was yet to determine when the book will be launched after which he will notify the various stakeholders, including the media.

One term

Dr. Dlamini served only one term as the PM after he was appointed by His Majesty the King on November 14, 2003. His Majesty went on to honor him with the “Royal Medal of the Supreme Advisor to the Royal Decree of King Sobhuza II.” He remained in office until September 18, 2008 when Bheki Dlamini was appointed acting Prime Minister. On October 16, 2008, he was succeeded by former Prime Minister Barnabas Sibusiso Dlamini.

He gained experience in many different fields since his apprenticeship, holding managerial positions with the Eswatini National Provident Fund, the Central Bank of Eswatini and the Eswatini Industrial Development Company. In addition, Dlamini served as a director in many Swati companies. From 1991 he was the director and chairman of Tibiyo TakaNgwane, a national organization for the preservation of the culture of Eswatini and the development of economic strategies.
