Ezulwini – His Majesty King Mswati III has called on emaSwati to preserve their cultural heritage and uphold respect and humility, describing these values as important foundations for national unity, attracting investment and building a prosperous Eswatini.
The King delivered the message during the 2026 Ingwenyama Cup and Cultural Prize Presentation at the Ezulwini Palazzo and International Convention Centre (ICC) on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, where he emphasised that the country’s traditions must be protected and passed on to younger generations.
His Majesty highlighted traditional attire, dance and respect for others as important elements of Swati identity, stressing that emaSwati should remain proud of the heritage inherited from their forefathers.
He said preserving these traditions required more than celebrating them during national events. Young people must also be taught to understand their significance, embrace their values and carry them into the future.
The King’s message placed cultural preservation at the centre of the country’s national identity, with respect and humility presented as values that can strengthen relationships and encourage cooperation across society.
Beyond its role in preserving identity, His Majesty highlighted the potential of Swati culture and the character of emaSwati to contribute to the country’s economic prospects.
He noted that international investors had expressed attraction to Eswatini because of the respect, cultural pride and humility of its people.
According to the King’s remarks, these qualities, combined with a strong work ethic, help build trust, strengthen relationships and create opportunities for investment.
The message presents culture as more than a tradition inherited from previous generations. It also has the potential to contribute to Eswatini’s economic development by strengthening the country’s appeal to investors and supporting opportunities for employment and enterprise.
However, attracting investment also depends on practical considerations, including the business environment, infrastructure, policy certainty and the availability of skilled workers.
The King’s emphasis on respect and humility therefore highlights the importance of preserving the country’s cultural identity while creating an environment in which economic opportunities can grow.
His Majesty stressed the importance of ensuring that the country’s cultural values remain relevant to younger generations.
Traditional attire, dance and other cultural practices form part of the nation’s heritage, but their continued preservation depends on young people learning and embracing them.
The call comes as national events such as the Ingwenyama Cup bring together football supporters, cultural performers and communities from across the Kingdom, providing a platform for celebrating Swati identity.
The tournament’s combination of sport and culture also reflects the potential of national events to strengthen social ties and encourage a shared sense of belonging among emaSwati.
The King further underscored the importance of respect as a foundation for relationships, noting that it opens doors and encourages others to offer support.
For a society seeking greater unity and prosperity, the message was that cultural pride must be accompanied by conduct that demonstrates respect for others.
The emphasis on these values also places responsibility on families and communities to ensure that children grow up understanding the traditions and principles that define Swati society.
Preserving the country’s heritage, His Majesty’s message suggests, requires a collective effort to ensure that cultural practices and values remain part of everyday life rather than being confined to ceremonial occasions.
As Eswatini continues to pursue economic development, the King called for the nation to remain grounded in its cultural identity, with respect, humility and pride in its heritage helping to strengthen the unity needed to build a prosperous future.
