Siteki – A 25-year-old Siteki man wanted in connection with an attempted murder case and four robbery cases, including the robbery of an Asian-owned shop, was shot dead by police after allegedly attempting to escape during an investigation.
According to the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS), the suspect was arrested at about 3am in Bhunya before being transferred to Siteki Police Station for further investigations.
Police said the suspect later led investigators to a forest opposite the robbed shop, where he allegedly claimed his accomplices had been hiding and storing stolen property.
However, upon arriving at the location, the suspect allegedly fled into the forest.
Police said officers gave chase and fired several warning shots, but the suspect ignored them. During the pursuit, he was fatally wounded.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting were not immediately disclosed.
The police said investigations into the robbery cases are continuing and efforts are underway to trace the remaining suspects believed to have acted together with the deceased.
REPS appealed to the outstanding suspects to hand themselves over to the police as investigations continue.
