Mbabane – Five men are expected to appear before the Matsapha Circuit Court today in connection with the alleged theft of Hall’s sweets and Chappies worth E1.8 million from a warehouse in Matsapha.
The suspects, aged 30, 34, 35, 38 and 41, were arrested by Matsapha Police after investigations into the disappearance of the confectionery stock. They are from Mankayane, Manzini, Nhlambeni and Zombodze.
According to police, the case was reported on July 11 by a 54-year-old man from Mhlaleni, who discovered that stock valued at E1.8 million had gone missing from the warehouse.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the theft is believed to have taken place over several months, between January and June this year.
Police said investigations began immediately after the matter was reported, with evidence pointing to the possible involvement of employees at the warehouse.
Two suspects were arrested on July 11, while three more were taken into custody on Tuesday at about 2pm.
The five have since been charged and are expected to make their first appearance before the Matsapha Circuit Court today.
Police said investigations were continuing and more arrests had not been ruled out as detectives worked to establish the full extent of the alleged theft and identify anyone else who may have been involved.
