Mae Lee gets real about toxic love in “Something About U”

MBABANE – Eswatini-born artist Mae Lee has joined forces with Key 2 Key, OfficialFarmboi and The Skinny DJ on her latest soulful amapiano single, “Something About U,” a deeply emotional track that explores the complicated realities of love, heartbreak, and emotional conflict.

Blending soulful melodies with amapiano rhythms, the song tells the story of two people trapped in a toxic yet passionate relationship, a bond filled with both love and pain. Through heartfelt lyrics and emotionally charged vocals, Mae Lee paints a relatable picture of two lovers struggling to decide whether they are better apart or together.

According to the artist, the inspiration behind the song came from personal experiences and real-life situations she has witnessed around her.

“It’s about a boy and a girl who loved each other but were bad for each other. It’s a love and hate situation… they want to be together but the toxicity is too much. So they don’t know if they are better off alone or better together. Most of it is based on the girl’s feelings,” she explained.

The Mbabane-based singer says she intentionally wanted the song to feel emotionally honest, giving listeners something they could genuinely connect with.

“I’ve seen people going through similar things, but they would never be honest about how they felt. I wanted to be honest about those feelings,” said Mae Lee.

Musically, “Something About U” introduces a refined and soulful sound while still staying rooted in amapiano. Mae Lee explained that the melody was carefully crafted to carry the emotion of the story, while the vocals were meant to deliver the message with depth and intimacy.

“It’s a soulful sound but at the same time it’s amapiano. The melody carries the emotion and the vocals carry the message. I hope people feel a lot when they listen to it, that they relate and feel what the girl was feeling,” she added.

The single also marks a subtle evolution in Mae Lee’s artistry, as she embraces an international approach by recording the track in English to reach a wider audience while maintaining her unique musical identity.

“It’s also a new sound or approach I’ve taken. It’s in English, targeting a wider audience. I think people will recognize it immediately by the quality and uniqueness of my voice and the way I approach songs — it sounds familiar, but you can’t place it anywhere except Mae Lee,” she said.

Known for her emotional storytelling and relatable songwriting, Mae Lee says her goal is to create music that resonates deeply with listeners rather than simply releasing songs for entertainment.

“I am not just an artist who releases music, but an artist who releases meaningful music, powerful, relatable, and easy to connect with,” she said.

With its emotional honesty, soulful production, and relatable theme of love that both heals and hurts, “Something About U” is expected to resonate strongly with fans of amapiano and soulful contemporary music alike.
